Wrapped

I learned a new rule for the Christmas season.  Don’t let a three year old help you wrap presents.  This is not a rule based on the frustration of letting a three year old help you pick out the pattern of the paper for each gift.  It has nothing to do with cutting straight lines or even the placement of the tape.  It is not related to the color coordination of the bow and the wrapping paper.  It is also not about deciding where to place a bow on the gift box.

I learned this lesson because I underestimated the intelligence and memory span of a three year old when I allowed my oldest daughter to help me wrap gifts.  She was barely even three.  Her birthday is on December fifteenth.  I thought gift wrapping would be a great way for her to help me and to keep Sarah from waking up her younger sister.  Preventing her little sister from taking a nap was one of Sarah’s favorite pastimes.

All the presents were stacked in the dining room.  She helped me wrap and label each gift.

About week after our gift wrapping session, we loaded up the car and drove to my parent’s house in Mississippi to celebrate Christmas with my parents, younger brother, and his family.  When it was time to open gifts, Sarah wanted to help hand out the presents.  As she handed the wrapped gifts to each person, she announced the contents.

“Uncle Doug here is your clock.  Mom, this is your duck.  Pop, you have a shirt.”

She did not miss a beat and she did not get any of the presents wrong.

Oh well, I learned my lesson.  Never underestimate the intelligence of a young child.

When the little girl and her mother arrived at the hospital the doctor came out and said, “I’m very sorry, we did everything we could to save him, but he died on the operating table.”

The little girl and her mother burst into tears.

Intruder

“Hey Graham, want to come over today?”

“ Is your dad going to be home, Logan?”

“Yeah! I thought maybe we could skateboard.”

“ That sounds good to me!”, Graham exclaimed. “We’re not going to get into trouble are we?” Graham asked.

“Do you think I get into trouble?” Logan asked.

“No, because you got a cool dad.”

So they waited for school to end so they can go home. Logan asked, “Is this day ever going to end?”

Graham was in health class when the intruder alarm went off.

His friend asked him if he was scared.

He said, “Well yeah.” He whispered to his self, “I want to go home!”

Logan was in Science when it went off. He thought it was one of those practice drills, so he didn’t get to a safe spot. He just stood there.

Graham was hoping Logan wouldn’t be stubborn this time.

The intruder walked into the room and grabbed Logan by the hair.

Logan yelled for help but no one heard him. “Mr. Intruder, I didn’t do anything!”

“Well son you’re supposed to get in a closet?”

“Well what’s the point in getting in a closet if you know where we are?”

“At least you’ll be safe somewhere want you?”

“Is that a question or what?”

“Well think about the next time this happens!”

“You mean it might happen again?”

“Son it could happen anytime and even any day.”

Logan yelled again and again.”

Graham came running down the hall and jumped on the intruder’s back. Graham tied up his feet and hands.

The cops found them in a classroom and made sure they were safe.

They called their dads to come to get them.

Logan and Graham got awards for getting the intruder.

Logan told the intruder he should have got in a safe place.

The cops asked them where they were when this all happened. Graham told them he was in a closet. Logan said he was in a closet too. But the cops knew it was a lie. They said son you’re too scared. If you were in a closet, you would not bethis scared.

Logan,” Graham said, you need to tell the truth.”

“I will give me time!”

“What are you two talking about?” Logan’s dad asked.

“Dad I wasn’t in a safe place when this happened.”

“I know! That’s why YOU’RE GROUNDED! Before you even start asking questions, you did the right thing by telling me the truth.”

“Does this mean I’m not grounded anymore?”

“What do you think I’m going to say?”

“No.”

“Good guess, but lets’ make it a month. I love you son.”

“I love you too, DAD! So can we go home?”

“Not until you tell me how scared you were.”

It is so hard to say good-bye!!

by

Candace Frazier

6th grade

I cannot say good-bye to you because,

I love your sense of humor

or maybe it is because you laugh at all

my jokes, even when they are not that funny,

but when I have a bad day

you can make it bright and sunny

when I think of you leaving I start to count all my

lonely evenings, but you'll be my best friend

till the end, and there’s no doubt.

So you can see why I can't say good-bye,

because if I did it would be a lie.

My  Dog

By

 Deah Stallings

7th grade

Hi my name is Deah Stallings. I am going to tell you the three things that are on my dog’s face that are black. My dog is a white dog. There are three things that are black on her face. Well, let me see if you can guess. Well can you? No! Well then how about I tell you.

The first things that I am going to tell you about are her eyes. My dog does have black eyes. She also has black eyelids. But, my dog has a blue rim around her eyes. Not all of the dogs like her have this blue rim around their eyes. This rim is not a very thick rim. You can not see it unless you get really close. Now let’s go to the next thing that is black on her face.

The second thing that I am going to tell you about is her nose. My dog does have a black nose but she does not have a black tongue. Her nose is not that big, it just depends on how big the dog is.  If you look really close then, you notice that their nose has little dots. Well, let’s go to the last thing that is on the face of my dog.

The last thing that I am going to tell you about is her mouth. My dog has black lips and they are very smooth or at least they look like they are. Her lips are really thick and shiny. All of the dogs like her have thick lips. Well I need to sum this up don’t you think?  Well, let’s see what else we can learn about my dog.

My dog has black and pink on the top of her nose. She is only one year old. She sleeps all the time; but, she gets really mean. She is not very fat but she is a little fat. Well that is all that I know about my dog. Thank you for listening to my story.

Choices

The last thing you would want is another story about knights, wizards, witches, werewolves, vampires, the familiar one hero roundabout story that you see over and over again. Really, it is.
Those things are terribly boring after seeing them once over a million times. But have you ever heard of a plain story with objects that transmit energies that could very possibly be real? Maybe a story that could be overly ordinary but could also happen right there in your life? Well...
"What is it?"
"Don't ask me."
"Why not?"
"Well maybe I don't know what it is in the first place."
Sapna and Oma peered wonderingly at the rectangular object that they had come upon in the forest.
They were walking, oh so very ordinarily, in the woods down the street from Sapna's house. But not just all over the place. They were on a road. It was an old road that had been used by wagons. It was also by the railroad that was still used and trains ran by there at about five o' clock every day. The road didn't have a name, but they called it Sadie's Walk, after the movie that had come out just that summer about a wiccan and her spells and what she did to this terrible boy. He was quite terrible. Terrible, indeed. And so was the movie. But they didn't mind.
Sapna and Oma found the road to be very interesting and so they picked out a Saturday in October. But not just any October… Halloween, all hallows eve, to investigate and mind-map it out.
"Well maybe you should find out." Oma told Sapna, as she put her face very close to the rectangular thing.
"Okay... Sapna picked up the board and dusted all the leaves off and then dropped it as if it was poison.
"Sapna! What is it?" Oma asked urgently.
"Oma... Do you really have no clue what this is?

"Sapna stared at Oma's face as serious as ever.
         "Really! What is it?"
“ Oma. Are you telling the truth?” Sapna took Oma by the shoulders and looked at Oma’s face, holding her stare.
"Yes Sapna! Now what is it?"
"Its a Ouija board. Its spelled O-u-i-j-a. But pronounced like wi-ji."
         "Okay. What’s a Ouija board?"
"It's a board that you use to talk to spirits. Good and evil. It's against the Christian religion, that's why I dropped it."
"How do you use it?" Oma picked the board up and opened her eyes really wide.
"You take the..." Sapna looked under the board for the latch that held the planchette, undid it, and let the plachette drop out. The planchette is sort of rounded off tear drop shaped, wooden and with a glass lens. "Planchette, put it on the board, place your fingertips very lightly on it, ask the board a question, and it moves on its own."
         "Oh. Can we..." Oma started.
Sapna cut her off mid-sentence. "No." She took the board away from Oma. "We won't use it. Never. It's got evil things in it, Oma... I can feel it. The only thing we can do is bury it. if we try to destroy it, it will only cause bad problems."
"What kind of bad problems?" Oma asked, taking the board back from Sapna.
"Like, it could kill us. That’s what kind of problems I'm talking about. It's a connection to the devil himself. At least, that's what my church says."

Sapna took the other half of the board and held it. "Oh. Well maybe your church is wrong..."

Oma started to pull the board away from Sapna, and Sapna pulled the board away from Oma's hands.  "No. It’s not wrong. It's the church. It could never be wrong."
"It could. The church makes mistakes just like we do" Oma put her hands on the board and quickly pulled it away, and walked a little more down the path, looking at the board intently.
           "Oma..."
"Wait. Sapna. Did you see that little building there before?" Oma looked to the right of her, away from the railroad tracks, towards a little building that looked like a mini-house.
           "No... I didn't actually."
"Let's go see what's in it..."
"Alright... But only for a few minutes."
Oma and Sapna walked together through the dying brush to the mini-house. As soon as Sapna walked over to it, and got a look in it, she stopped. Oma kept walking until she noticed that Sapna had stopped.
"Sapna, whats the matter this time?"
        "I..." Her voice trembled.
        "C'mon, spit it out!"
        "I can't go in there, Oma. I just can't."
        "Why not?"
        "Don't you see those markings?"
        "Yeah..."
"They mean death. They all mean death."
        "So what?"
"People have been practicing witchcraft around here. And I have my reasons to believe that it was with that board."  She pointed to the Ouija board which Oma held.
"Okay fine. We won't go in there." Oma stepped down the grassy bank and brushed past Sapna.
"Oma don't get mad at me..." Sapna begged.
"No, it's fine. We don't have to go in there if you don't want to be declined by the church."
"I won't be declined from the church. Not exactly."
"Nothing can happen if you don't tell them."
"But I have to. It's a rule of the church to tell them if you've been in contact with the evil stuff and whatnot. Then they'll sprinkle me with holy water to cleanse my soul."
"Who cares? Are you really that religious?" Oma sped her pace up while she was walking down the path with long gone ruts that had grown over with thick grass.
"Yes, I am actually. And if you can't respect my religion, then we might as well not be friends."
"But I want to be friends..." Oma turned around, clutching the board with both arms.
"So do I." Sapna turned her back on Oma. "But if you can't let me do what I have to, then we don't need to be friends." She walked away.
         "But Sapna!"
"No. We can't be friends. I'm sorry."
"Fine. Bye." Oma turned back to go down the road.
         "Bye..." Sapna said regretfully.
Oma went to thinking about the angry conversation that she and Sapna had just encountered, going over it countless times. Only a bump in the friendship was what Oma thought.
"I thought she'd never leave." Oma heard an unfamiliar voice in her ear.
She turned to look in all directions, eyes going everywhere.
"What?" Oma said into the woods.
           "I said, I thought she'd never leave."
"Who and where are you?" Oma questioned.
A girl a few years older than her walked out of the forest, the side with the mini-house on it.  She had white hair, icy blue eyes, and rosy red lips. She was skinny, sort of tall, and had baggy white clothes on that had surprisingly stayed very clean with the environment.
"I am here. And I'm Larina."
"What do you want?" Oma said.
        "I want you."
Oma had a few things run through her mind, and all were very wrong in so many ways. "What for?"
        "My ritual."
        "For what?"
        "The revival."
        "Of what?"
         "Salem."
          "No."
          "Hmm... Why not?"
"Sapna told me not to mess with anything like that."
"Well you're not always going to listen to your dear Sapna are you?"
"No... But I trust her on this one."
"Hm. Fine then." She turned to walk away, then stopped. "But you remember this,      Oma Emiri Eureka, you'll regret it. And I'll make sure you do."  With that last statement from Larina, she left and disappeared into the woods, hidden from view once more.

Oma was standing there, then all of the sudden, she threw the Ouija board into the thicket.
           "Weirdo."
           "I know, right?"
"Sapna!" Oma screamed with joy and turned around.
"Hey, Oma." Sapna smiled and walked up to Oma.
"Did you see that scary lady?" Oma's eyes drifted over to where the lady disappeared.
"No, I didn't. But I did see you talking to yourself..."
"But she was right there! All dressed in white and everything!"
"I don't think she was real."
"She was. Cause I saw her. And I know I'm not crazy. Not to the point where I see things like that."
"You could be. The Ouija board does things like that to people. It could very well happen."
"But it didn't and I know for a fact that I saw her. For a fact."
"You've gone crazy in the head. Let's keep going." Sapna said, and walked past Oma; eventually she followed. They walked on the path for a long time for about fifteen minutes, and then they had to stop. There was a fork in the road, and there was also deep black water on the right side of the left fork.
"Sapna, I think we should go back..."
"No, Oma. You wanted to keep going, so we're going to keep going no matter what you say. Disregard that horrid water and let's get going. Should we split up on different forks, or take both together?"
      "Both together." Oma said quickly.
"Ha, you're scared, aren't you?" Sapna said, arms folded.
      "Maybe a little..." she admitted.
"You are! I knew it." Sapna replied triumphantly.

"So what. Let's go. Left fork first."
     "Alright."
So they went, walking down the little road that they had found, stopping every once in a while. Eventually the path went so far in that direction that it overlapped the railroad and continued on the other side.
All of the sudden, right before she walked onto the railroad tracks, she stopped.
      "What’s the matter?"
"Nothing... I just don't have a good feeling about this."
"What do you mean not a good feeling?"
"It's just... I can't explain it but I think we should go back and go on the other fork." Oma said, backing away.
     "Oma... Come on. "
      "Okay..."
They were oblivious to the sound of the train as it rounded the corner on its track.  They kept going on the tracks, as if they never heard anything.  Both of them were hit by the oncoming train; they both died.  Apparently Sapna and Oma weren't supposed to see something...  That afternoon, both were found on the either sides of the tracks, mushed to pieces. The police had to visit the site, and both bodies were taken in to the funeral home.
Found at the scene of death, was the very same Ouija board that Sapna and Oma had touched. Apparently Larina had made Oma pay, Sapna too, with their lives.
They both were buried that evening in the Carson Willoughby Cemetery.
Sapna's death was recorded on the tombstone as October 31st, 2001.
Oma's death was recorded on the tombstone as I'm still alive; her death date always changed from the exact day as Sapna, to I'm still alive with certain people. People who were known to have a sixth sense.
        Seven years later...
"Kaito, I think we should go back home..." Ari said as they looked at the tombstones.
       "Ari, are you seeing this?"
       "Yeah and it's creepy..."
The tombstones of the two girls were completely different.
“But it’s cool! We need to research this more. Find out more about it. Let’s go to the phonebook directory at the library and find their parents.”
"Kaito, where do you get these twisted ideas? And they’re smart but still… They might not want to answer questions.”
"Ari, we'll never know what happened and why unless we ask.”
      "Okay, fine..."
So they went to the library, and looked up Oma's mother's name; it was under Eliza Eureka. She lived with her husband on 143 Croissant Dr.
"Okay, come on Ari, we've gotta find out what happened and how that tombstone keeps changing.” Kaito said.
They both went to the house, which they had no problem finding on foot, and knocked on the door.
A lady that seemed to be in her late thirties opened the door in surprise. "Well, well, what might we have here?" she said.
"You have two people, I'm Kaito and she's Ari."
"Oh... Well what do you need with me?"
"We need to know... About Oma."
Her face went from peach, to a dull gray.  She looked down and closed her eyes.

"What do you need to know?"
"We need to know how she died and where and when." Ari said to her.
The lady, Eliza, sat them down in the living room and told them about everything about her daughter.
Then they asked, "Where can we find this place?"
"It's down this road, and you turn left, and then go behind Sapna's house, it's red brick, and through the woods. You should see it in about a minute or so after you enter the woods. Why are you asking these questions?"
"Because... Have you ever looked at your daughter's grave and noticed a difference in the day of death?" Kaito asked her.
She looked at them in surprise. "No, why do you ask?"
"Oh, no reason..." Kaito and Ari got up and walked to the door followed my Mrs. Eureka.
"Thank you, Misses Eureka." They both said in unison, and then followed her directions to the woods.
Ari stopped at the woods; she looked scared.
"What's wrong?" Kaito said to her.
     "Nothing..."
"Oh come on, I'm your best friend, if you're scared, then you can go home and I'll go by myself."
"No, no that's okay, I'll come with you."
Both of them walked through the woods, tramping over piles of leaves, until they came to a bend in a road.
     "Which way?" Ari asked Kaito.
"Not sure. Let's go to the right. I'm pretty sure it continues more that way than the right side."
So they went down the left part of the bend, and then the road curved around and went back to where they had come from. They walked that several times until they noticed a brown path that had no trees and a series of ruts running through it.
"Come on, let's go this way." Kaito said to Ari, and pulled her sleeve in that direction.
The path curved to the right, and then it just kept going over a bunch of hills, then disappeared out of sight behind a line of trees.
Ari went first before Kaito did, and then Ari stopped again.
     "What is that?" Ari questioned.
     "I don't know. Let's go see."
They walked over to a little house type thing, and then peered inside.  There were a lot of markings and devil signs and everything. All of them more or less evil.
"Ari, do you know what these are?" Kaito asked.
"Nope. Do you?" Ari turned to him.
"Not a clue. But they look bad."
Ari walked out of the house and walked down the slope, watching Kaito. "Let's just keep-"
        She tripped over something.
"Ari! Are you alright?" Kaito rushed out of the house and down to where she was.
"Yeah, I'm okay. My arm just hurts a little. Wretched thing... What did I trip over exactly?" Ari asked.
       "I don't know.   I'll look."
Kaito got up from where Ari was, and walked back up the slope.
"It was this thing." He picked up a rectangular board.
      "I know what that is..."
"What is it? It looks like a cheap game."
"It's not... Kaito you should put it down and let's keep going..."
"But it looks cool! Maybe we should keep it and find out what to do with it." Kaito said, carrying the board down the hill.
Ari got up and stopped Kaito.
"No, we can't." Ari said, taking the board from Kaito.
"What is it? tell me what it is and I'll put it down, depending on what's bad about it."he said, taking the board back from Ari.
"It's a Ouija board. You can talk to spirits and stuff with it. It's evil, cause if you do one thing wrong, then your life is pretty much screwed up."
"Well it can't be that bad..."
"Yes it can! You have no idea!"
      "I think I might do."
     "Well you don't."
"Don't get so mad at me!"
"I'm sorry but we can't mess with it..." Ari took it from him again and slung it into the woods.
"Alright, fine. I trust you on this one. But next time, it's my call."
"Okay... Let's keep going." Ari pushed past Kaito, him following her.
So they went, just as Sapna and Oma did, down the path and then came the fork in the road.
     "Your call."
"I'm aware. Umm... The right one."
"Yeah. I'll agree with you on that one cause that dark water is freakin' creepy." Ari said, shivering.
Kaito kept going, leaving Ari behind until she realized he was going on ahead and she decided to run to catch up to him.
"Meanie." Ari muttered, then stuck her tongue out at him.
      "Sorry."
The path wound in different directions until they started seeing a gray object.
"What is that?" Ari asked Kaito.
"I think it's a part of a cement tunnel. See, look," He got behind her and pointed," that big black hole looks like the opening in the tunnel."
      "Should we go to it?"
"Nah, let's just keep following the path." said Kaito.
      "Alright."
The path followed along the cement wall, and then the cement wall stopped and rounded the corner beside a set of railroad tracks, stopping the path, and then continuing on the other side. It seems as if the other fork ended a few feet from the right fork, because there was another path that ended at the same place.
     "Weird. Okay, let's go."
They both walked across, and just as Sapna and Oma did, they didn't hear the train.
But at the last moment, right before they were doomed, they were thrown up into the air as the train went by, completely missing them.
     "Ari, ARI! What's happening?"
"I don't know, Kaito!" They shouted over the roar of the train.
     "We could've died!"
     "I know!"
A whisper of air enveloped them, blocking out the train's noise.
"Don't be afraid. We're saving you." Two different voices said, and by the time they got done talking, Kaito and Ari were already on the ground.
     "Could those have been...?"
"No. Let's just keep going, Kaito."Ari said, and walked away across the tracks fast; Kaito ran up to catch her.
"So we're going to keep going after that little escapade?"
"Yeah I guess..." Ari slowed her pace.
They walked together the remaining way across the railroad tracks.
"Maybe there was something over here that wasn't supposed to be seen." Kaito said.
"Maybe so. But we should find out what 'it' is." Ari said.
Both of them continued on the path as it drew more and more away from the town. They were so far out that they couldn't hear the roar of the road anymore.  It was complete silence and getting dark; closer to the sunset.  The orange glow illuminated them, and cast their shadows in front of them.
"Dang. I never realized my hair was that wild..." Ari looked at her shadow, which had curly hair just as she did, because it was her shadow after all.
     "It's really not that bad."
"Look at my hair! It's so curly and poofy. Like an afro."
"It's still not that bad. I love your hair."
      "Yeah, well I don't."
For awhile after that, they didn't talk, until they came upon a gaping hole right in the middle of the path.
"What is that?" Ari asked Kaito.
"No clue. Let's go in it." Kaito started walking towards it.
"No, no let's not." Ari pulled on Kaito's shirt sleeve.
"I'm going." He said, and then jumped down.
"Oh man..." Ari dropped down behind him.
To be continued...

Horses and Their Lives

By

Their Nature

Some horses are wild.  Some are tame. Horses come in many different colors like black, brown, white, or any other color as long as they’re not pink, blue, yellow or any other odd color. Some horses can be more than one color like brown and white, or black and white. Some just don’t look their color name. For example blue roam looks grey, while strawberry roam looks reddish brown. Well I think you get my point about color.

                                                            Saddle Fitness

As most horse lovers know you want your horse to be comfortable. Some people are mean or abusive to horses, but we’ll get to that in the next chapter. Saddles are great if you’re just beginning to ride ,but if you’re twelve like me ,and you have been riding most of you’re life then your legs  are probably built up enough to ride bare back or without a saddle. Saddles come in many different shapes, and sizes, but you want to choose the saddle that is best for your horse.

                                                            Horse Abuse

Some people don’t know what they are doing is wrong. Some people know they are abusing the horses, but they just don’t think it’s wrong. I proved to them that what they were doing was wrong. People think it makes their horse more obedient, well it doesn’t. It scares horses so much they don’t even want to go around you, or any other human or thing that tries to show them love. So as a conclusion to this chapter don’t ever do these things:

        1. Don’t hit a horse in the face.

        2. Don’t whip them more than once.

        3. Don’t leave them unattended when tied up.

        4. Don’t give them to much sweet feed.

        5. Don’t leave their hoofs unclean or picked out.

If you do one or all of these things please change your ways now to be a loving and caring owner for your horse to trust and love.

                                                            Bridle Fitness

Some people think they can let their horse take any bit, but they can’t. It’s not horse abuse about which bit you choose, but it is when you choose the wrong size. Let’s say you have a horse that’s one to two years old. Then it is okay to let your horse take a straight bit, but if your horse is elderly then give them a broken bit. Walking horses however after their broke they need a broken bit. Bits are very important to you as a rider and to your horses as the carrier. Some bits draw more tension to your horse than other bits. That’s why I gave you the information you as a beginning rider, or to those who just didn’t know. Yes it does hurt horses if the wrong bit you choose.

                                                          Wide Open Spaces

Wide open spaces are what horses need. An acre a horse is what I always say. Some people just keep their horses in barns while their horse is healing, that’s ok, but they’ll heal a lot faster if you just lessen their space depending on their condition. If I were you I would let my horse have at least one cow-roll of hay that didn’t take up space. If you don’t have any where to put your horse you could call a stable, but be sure to put your horse on a schedule to where he/she knows you are coming with treats!

Your Horse Feed

Your horse’s feed gives them nutrients,  just don’t give them to much feed. The reason being is so that your horse won’t get colic and die, or become foundered. One feed cup of horse feed is enough for your horse’s one serving a day, but you should give your horse three servings a day so that it will become healthy , and strong! So all in all you horse should have three cups a day. If your horse is elderly however, you could feed them Golden Years horse feed, or any other feed that you trust to give your horse good nutrition, and vitamins. *Remember that some horses may need more nutrition than others, so be willing to meet their needs, and help your horse live a long, healthy, and happy life style!

Riding

Remember, before you ride a horse get to know the horse, make the horse feel like nothing can happen to him/her. Also never be afraid of your horse, if you are then take a little bit more time to get to know the horse. If your not scared then try riding with adult supervision. Then if you get to be scared while mounted then don’t let the horse know. Never let the horse know your feelings, if you do then you could  get seriously injured!

                                                   Negative/Positive Vibrations

Both negative and positive vibrations will affect the way your horse acts, some can cause good and bad reactions.*Remember their is never a bad horse some times it’s the owner/trainer, and sometimes the horse is just nervous. Any vibration can be both good and bad. Negative vibrations can make your horse sense that there is something to be afraid of, or some times the horse may think it is nothing to be afraid of and then you may jump unexpectedly and make him/her become spooked. Positive vibrations may go both ways, for example your horse may get out of control because your horse may get scared because you are happy or get to happy along with the fact that you are happy.*Remember to never show your feelings unless you are just talking to the horse in a calm, gentle way.

Buying a Horse

Buying a horse may be very stressful for a first time rider, and some times it can be stressful for the horse too. Even though the horse that you are trying to buy may seem loving, that doesn’t mean that the horse will act that way as soon as it gets out of the trailer. When you go to buy a horse the auctioneer only says what he hears, so the recent owner may over dose the horse on a certain type of medication to make the horse seem alright when really the horse is wild. Just think of the medication as being Ritalin for a child that has A.D.H.D. *Remember not all horse owners are going to be honest about the horses behavior. So, if you have anyone in your family that rides horses, you probably need to take them along with you to test ride the horse. So with one more suggestion before we move to the next paragraph, never take the horse owner’s word when they say “My horse is broke.” because you never know.

Selling a Horse

Selling a horse can be stressful for you, the person who is getting the horse, and last but not least the horse. Whether you are selling the horse for financial purposes, or simply because you found a better horse or pet companion. Now as the writer of this book I do want you to have the horse(s) of your dreams and not mess up to be stuck with one that needs serious training. When selling a horse you don’t necessarily need to lie to the buyer just explain your horse.

A Boy Becomes a Knight

by,

Joshua Hazelwood

6th Grade

One day a young boy named Adam asked his dad if he could become a knight.

The boy’s dad, Chris, said.  “What good deeds have you done?”

“ None. What should I do?” said Adam.

“Well,” said Chris, “help Mrs. Dolloway, with this year’s harvest.”

So Adam did. When he was done, his dad said, ‘Good, now help Mr. McCully carry in his groceries.”

“Ok,” said Adam. When he was done, Adam asked his dad if that was all.

“One more thing,” said Chris. “Go in the house and get me my sword.”

“Ok,” said Adam.

When he got back, Chris said, “Now hand it to me.”

 Adam did so.

“Kneel,” said Chris. He put the sword on both Adams shoulders, and said, “Now rise, You are now a KNIGHT!”

SHADOWS

By

 Kailee Pritchett

7th grade

There is s shadow of darkness and a shadow of light. These shadows are not found on the outside, but the inside of YOU. They determine what kind of person you are for the shadow of light brings happiness and joy while the shadow of darkness brings misery and pain. How to describe these shadows are not what you think.

The shadow of light might bring joy and happiness, there’s a dark secret to the shadow of light. How do you think the shadow of light becomes so happy and joyful? The answer to that question is: the happiness it gets actually is the sorrow and misery of those they “feed” off of.. The shadow of light feeds off of people’s emotions.  People who are either down and sad at that time or people with a lost shadow. These lost shadows are the people’s emotions that can’t decide either to be a shadow of light or a shadow of darkness.

The shadow of darkness might bring misery and pain. But it has a good reason too, for why it is sad.  It is sad because of the shadow of light. Watching the shadow of light “eat away” the lost shadows and the people that are sad at that time creates sadnessin the shadow of darkness. The shadow of darkness wants to do something, but most of the time it can’t.  This sense of helplessness is making them feel sad for sadness brings misery and sorrow with it. That is why there is misery and pain in this world. This is how the world works. Without it, it would be destruction of the world as we know it.

But is there no happiness in the world today? The answer to that question is, Yes, there is happiness in the world, but it is referring to the person not the shadow. Your shadow might be the control center for the emotional part of your mind. But you can control the physical part o your mind. You can control the smile on your face and laugher of your mouth, but the emotional thoughts are both controllable and uncontrollable at the same time.

These shadow are not visible to the naked eye (or mine), if you wish to see these shadows you have to look deep into the person. Watch how they behave toward others, see how they treat you, and how much compassion they have for the human life.

You might be wondering about the compassion for human life, well if you don’t get it, I’ll will explain. Hitler had a light shadow and he treated others cruelly, awfully, badly, and gave them misery.  While Mother Teresa had a dark shadow, she felt the pain of others, so she acted, and she helped them.

What shadow do you have?

Max & Snows Exciting Journey!

By:

Kayla Kanehl

6th grade

Once there was a girl and her name was Snow. Snow was 10 years old. She was always made fun of because of her name. There were two bullies in her school, and their names were Amy and Kayla. They were always mean to other people especially Snow. So, one day Snow thought to herself “I’ll show them not to mess with me any more.”

The next morning Snow was thinking of a plan to really teach them a lesson. So, when she was thinking she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She jumped out of her chair and yelled “ah!” with extreme astonishment. It was just her friend Max.

At recess time Snow and Max jumped rope. Max wanted to know what Snow was doing early this morning in the classroom. Snow told him what she was doing and then she told him to be quiet. When she told him about what she was going to do he almost fainted. Max thought she was kidding, but she wasn’t.

Snow and Max couldn’t wait to get out of school because they knew what they were going to do to the school bullies. They were both very excited about it. Before they left school, they made sure they knew exactly what they were going to do. They waited until it got dark and then started walking toward the bullies’ houses.

When they got there they had to be very quiet. The reason they did was because they were going to toilet paper their house. They thought it was an excellent idea. After they both were done they quietly and secretly tip toed back to Snow’s house.

The next morning when Snow and Max got to school Kayla and Amy were in the corner of the class room talking. When they saw Max and Snow they started to walk toward them. Max and Snow looked at each other with frightened looks on their face. They thought that Kayla and Amy knew that they were the ones who put toilet paper on their house.

When they got to Max and Snow they asked them if they knew what happened to their house.

Max and Snow both said that they had no clue what they were talking about. Max and Snow must have had a concerned look on their face because they looked at them really weird and said “Are you sure?” together.

Max and Snow both shook their heads yes they were sure. Well, anyway our houses both had toilet paper on them when we woke up this morning. Max and Snow both said “NO!”

“Do you know who did it?” they asked.

“Nope but we intend to find out” Kayla and Amy said.

A week went by and still they didn’t find out who did it. So, Max and Snow weren’t as worried. As days went on Max and Snow started to lose their fear of Kayla and Amy finding out who did it.

Friends are people you trust, care for, and love.

People who listen when your mad, sad, or happy.

People who are there for you,

Who stand by your side.

Friends are so many things.

You can't put them into words,
but friends are people who stay with you no matter what happens

Penny Rogers

By

MaRenda Wecker

Penny Rogers was a strange little girl. Some people thought that she was cursed and some thought that she could not speak.

One summer day Penny was shopping with her mom for school clothes for the next year. She saw someone from school. Her name was Summer Fleet. Penny thought Summer was nice.  But when Penny waved at Summer, Summer started to laugh at Penny for some odd reason. Penny was so embarrassed.

The next day Penny had to go to school despite what happened yesterday at the store. She knew that Summer called some of her friends and told them what happened at the store. But her mom said that she had to go to school. So Penny went on to school.

She met a kid  named  Bell Connell. Bell was a new around. So Penny showed her around school and town and they became best friends.

Ms. Pat, the library teacher, also runs the writing club.  Ms. Pat gave sign up sheets to the teachers for the writing club.  Penny and Summer singed up for writing club. On the first day they got to write about themselves.

Summer said, “Have you seen the new kid?”

“No. Why?” said Penny.

“Because he’s a Bully and he said if  he sees anyone staring at him that he is going to be so mad at that person.’ said Summer. So Summer and Penny tried to stay away of the bully. The name even made kids shriek of terror. His name was Bobby Caring. But the only person he was caring about was himself.

Just about every person in the school tried to stay of Bobby’s way, but one was not so lucky. The kid’s name was John Builds. John was going to class as the bell rang and when it rang Bobby was staring at John. That poor kid never saw it coming to him.

I’m just glad that I did not get in Bobby’s way or I’d be the same way like John. So far there has not been another victim of Bobby, but Bobby still runs around the hall's looking for another helpless victim of crime.

By the time Penny and Summer got done with their story it was the dead line for the story and right in time too. Summer and Penny was so happy that they got done in time. By the end of the year they got to publish a story that they really liked a lot.  Penny wrote a mystery story and Summer wrote some poetry for her story.

School Life for Emma

By:

Monica Bell

8th Grade

“Emma, get up…. Emma are you even wake? ...EMMA WAKE UP!!”

“I am up, I am up...good grief! Can a girl get any sleep around here?!?”Emma said.

“Yes, you can, but you have to go to school today. Remember?” her mother asked.

Emma rolled her eyes. “Yes I know mom.”

She got up, got dressed, fixed her hair, did her makeup, ate and got ready for the bus.

Every morning she sits with her best friends, but today she did not. She forgot to study for her U.S. History test that was very hard.

“What are you doing?”Claire asked Emma.                                                       “Trying to study for a very hard test that I forgot to study for”, she said.

“Why do you even study?’ Claire asked.                                                          “Because I want to make good grades”   Emma said.

“Ok…Whatever you say” Claire said rolling her eyes.

Emma finally got to finish studying for her test. This does not look that hard she thought. There were two class periods before she has U.S. History. She remembers she had to finish a math test that she did not finish yesterday. She went to her math teacher’s classroom before her first period. Some of her best friends were there finishing up the same test. After she sat down Emily told her that problems 29 through 35 were harder than she thought they would be.

Emma had just finished when Zack, her guy friend, walked up right behind her and grabbed her sides. Emma jumped and made her squeaky sound at him. He started laughing.

“I love it when you make that sound; it makes me laugh every time you do it” Zack said.

“I know you do.” “You do it just because you like me and you like to hear the squeak sound I make” Emma said.

“That is right” he said with a smile.

Before I knew it, it was third period. A lot of kids were already in the classroom studying for the test.

“One of my friends said that the test is extremely hard” Josh whispered.

Emma panicked. Ok …what Josh said could all be a lie Emma thought. Or…..he could be telling the truth. She just decided to see for herself…and sure enough Josh was right.

After class Josh, Sarah and Emma were all walking together.                                        “Do you think the test was hard?” Josh asked.

“A little” Sarah said.” “A little too” Emma said.

“Both of you thought it was…easy?!?”

Josh asked. “No” Sarah and Emma said simultaneously.

The rest of the day flew by very fast. In gym, Emma’s team won the game by a few points and in reading/spelling the class went to library.

When she and her brother got home Emma finished her homework, did the laundry, helped her brother with his homework and helped cook some food foe supper.

“So, how was school?”her mom asked.

“Just the usual; had to take a test, hung out with my friends, finished up my activities I had to finish…just the same old day over and over again” Emma said.

 “O…ok” her mom said.

After a long night of sleep, like Emma said “the same old day starts over again and again, Emma woke up and did the same things as she did yesterday. The next morning Emma did the same things as usual; got up, got dressed, fixed her hair,

etc.

“What did you think you made on the test?” her mom asked.

“Maybe high”

“That sounds great” her mom said.

Her brother and she got on the bus and sat with their best friends.

“So what did you make on your test?” Claire asked.

Emma rolled her eyes. “Maybe high.”

“Hope you did too” Claire said.

The rest of the way to school was quite till we got into school. The first two periods flew by very fast. Emma was worried that she made a low grade in U.S. History. The bell rang to go to third period. When she got to U.S. History class a lot of kids were already in there ready to see their grades. When everyone arrived, Mrs. Perkins let us come to her desk to see our grades.

“Josh” Mrs. Perkins called.  He came back to her desk and left with a smile on his face.

“I made an 86” Josh said.

“Emma” she called. She went back and came back with a smile. “I made a 90”

“That is awesome” Sarah said

“Sarah” Mrs. Perkins called. Sarah went back and came back with a smile also.

“I made an 89” she said.

“That is great” Josh said.

“That is very good” Emma said.

Forth, Sixth and seventh period classes went fast. In health they did definitions. In reading/spelling they did a game for their vocabulary. In math they did another worksheet.

When she and her brother got home their mother was waiting to hear what Emma made on her test.

“Guess what I made on the test?”  “I made a 90 on my test!”

“Way to go!” her mom said.

For the rest of the afternoon, Emma finished her homework and cooked supper.

“Emma, get up…Emma are you even wake….EMMA WAKE UP!”…. “O NO!” Emma said….

The Life of a

Werewolf

By: Noah Fankhauser

8th Grade

One day this past year, October 24, 2007 to be precise, changed my life forever, but I didn't know it at that time.. But to tell you that story, I have to tell you this story.  This day was as usual like all the other days, but also what I didn't know was in seven days that something frightening would happen.

At school it was the same as any other day. In the evening though when I came home, a miracle has happened. When I looked unto the house, I was frightened, excited, and surprised all at the same time. Because my mother had done something that I never thought she would do. She had put up the Halloween decorations and even bought me a new costume. I couldn't believe my eyes, but I felt something was wrong, because my mother didn't like any of the holidays.

Because of an accident that happened about ten years ago, she was frightened in a car accident after she thought she had hit a kid in a costume. She swore she had hit the kid, but in a gust of smoke, the kid moved just in time. But now she has changed, but I don't know why. Now to the costume, because I was so astonished that I didn't care. The costume was black, had frightening blood stained fur, sharp teeth, cold black eyes,   and a huge snout. It looked as if it were a werewolf!

As I thought to myself "Why would she do what she did?" but I still thought it was sweet of her. I was still astonished. I walked, but as I walked my knees trembled as if I had seen a ghost. When I finally reached her, I gave a gigantic, bone crushing, thankful hug.

That night, I looked at the calendar, October 28 2007. Three more days until Halloween,

but I couldn't wait to get into my costume. So I ran to it, but with caution for I knew what

would happen to me if my parents saw me. I would be punished for being up after hours.
