Detention Policy

I.                    Detention will be held on Wednesday of each week from 3:00 until 4:45.

a.       Students must arrive by 3:00 and should bring textbook(s), AR books, paper, and pencil.  Magazines are NOT allowed in detention hall.  Students should spend this time studying quietly.

b.      Any student acting inappropriately during detention will be removed immediately and lose the time they have already served.  Sleeping, talking, refusing to work, horseplay, and other disruptions will be deemed inappropriate.

c.       Students will be required to stay for detention.  They will have two (2) opportunities to do so.  Corporal punishment will not be the consequence of not staying for detention.  Other punishments will be given by the principal or assistant principal in cases of non-compliance.

d.      Students receiving multiple detentions will be scheduled for a conference with the principal, assistant principal or counselor.  These students may be referred to the alternative school.

II.                 Reasons for Detentions

a.       Immoral behavior, use of foul or obscene language or gestures, insubordination, gum, candy and other inappropriate materials may result in a detention.

b.      Two unexcused tardies in an individual class per six-week period will result in a detention.

c.       Inappropriate behavior or violation of individual teacher or school rules can result in detention.

d.      Repeated violation of the dress code.

e.       Excessive skills lab referrals.

f.        Defacing school property, graffiti (also restitution).

g.       Cafeteria infractions.

Penalty Point System

Any discipline action taken in the form of a bus write-up, detention, corporal punishment, or other office referral will result in a penalty point.  The penalty point system will be used as part of the reward system (see section on rewards).

Attendance Policy

All DMS students are expected to attend school on a daily basis.  Students may have up to five (5) days per school year excused with a parent note.  These are to be used for sickness, funerals of immediate family members, approved educational activities, or emergencies.  If a doctor, dentist, orthodontist, court, or other appointment causes an absence, the student should bring a note from that appointment.  Doctors’ notes will not be accepted if the student did not actually go to the doctor.  After five (5) parent notes, doctors’ notes will be required for an absence to be excused.  Three unexcused tardies will result in one (1) unexcused absence.  Anyone with five (5) or more unexcused absences will be reported to the attendance supervisor and further action will be taken.

Reward System

Any student who does not receive a penalty point and does not have many absences will be periodically rewarded.  Students who are not eligible are not being punished.  They will continue with their regularly scheduled classes during reward times or otherwise be in a learning environment.

I.                    Students with zero (0) penalty points and no more than 3 absences in a 6 week marking period will be rewarded at the end of each marking period.  These rewards may be any of the following:

b.      Time outside

c.       Other activities to be determined

II.                 Students with zero (0) penalty points and no more than 5 absences in a semester will be rewarded at the end of the semester.   These rewards may be any of the following:
